Some animals are emotionally invested in the help they give others. Rescue dogs, for example, become depressed if instead of saving lives they only encounter corpse after corpse. After the Oklahoma City bombing, the search dogs became morose, wouldn’t eat, had to be dragged to work. No amount of treats or rewards could alter their sense of hopelessness. Only after a live “victim” was placed where the dogs could find him alive did their joy in their work resume…
